Implications of Extraterrestrial Life

The Bible, is it true?

The following quote originally published by Fox News provides ample cause to stimulate useful discussion regarding the apparent conflict between the teachings of the Holy Bible and the interpretations of the findings of modern science.

“If ‘the truth is out there, scientists are determined to find it—so much so that they’ve sent a message into space trying to contact aliens. But a response could take 25 years—if it comes at all. Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence (METI) International sent an encoded message into space using radio waves known as ‘Sonar Calling G1273b,’ which organization’s president and founder Doug Vakoch, believes could be received by intelligent life.”

Biblical teachings

The Bible claims that an omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, eternally existent God created the universe, including this little world which we call earth, merely by speaking them into existence (Genesis 1:1; Colossians 1:16). It also speaks of angels, intelligent beings existing unseen here on earth and in the heavens (Psalms 33:8-10). Furthermore, the Bible describes a rebellion in heaven between Lucifer (later known to us as the devil, Satan--an angelic being formerly serving closest to the throne of God in the heavens), and his fellow rebel angels), and God and those angels faithful to Him (Isiah 14:10-12; Ezekiel 28:12-18; Revelation 12: 7-17). According to the Holy Book, that conflict between God, the Creator, and the rebel angels, shifted to this world when Adam and Eve, the original humans, created to inhabit and govern Planet Earth, fell for the devil’s lying deception (Genesis 3: 1-24), thereby being drawn into the rebellion that began in heaven—a conflict that continues to this very day.

Critical to this entire discussion is the high price God paid to restore the dominion of the earth to man from Satan, and to prove His claim that the natural, Moral Law of Love is the only governing principle by which life can exist anywhere in the universe--thereby, successfully and eternally discounting Satan and his counter claim. That price included the descent of Jesus, the Son of God Himself, to the earth as a human being like Adam himself, to face Satan (who had conquered Adam in the Garden of Eden) in one on one combat--to defeat him, and thereby reclaim dominion of the earth to man (John 3:16). In the process, He would demonstrate the broad, all-inclusive nature of the Moral law of love, and confirm the claims of the Creator God that established it.

Search for truth regarding aliens

What is the truth of the matter? Do Aliens exist? Who are they? Are the Bible and the findings, theories, and suppositions of modern man compatible with one another, and if so, why, or why not?

If the Holy Bible is true as it claims to be, we would be foolish to fail to believe and trust its teachings. If so, the things we are learning and experiencing here on earth will eventually confirm its claims and predictions. If, on the other hand, the Bible is nothing more than a nice story, time and the facts of science will confirm its theories and observations.

Based upon the evidence available to us, we must each establish our own personal “faith” regarding the matter

Evidence of modern science in all of its disciplines

And what better possible source of evidence could there be than that existing in the accounts of the history of this world available to us from the Bible itself, the many other historical records and folklore from among the many various people groups around the world, and the findings of modern science itself? Considering these, it is not for lack of evidence that we must live in the “dark” regarding this subject of good and evil, and the nature of each, God and Satan, and their respective followers.

Natural Law: All of the laws governing the universe are scientifically “proven” to be unchangeable and completely dependable. Without an omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, creating, sustaining God as described in the Bible, it is difficult to understand how the universe (including our world), or even Natural Law itself, could even exist—especially the Natural Moral Law of Love without which even life itself cannot exist.

Human accomplishments in many disciplines: It is indeed impressive to witness or participate in the accomplishments of modern science during the past couple centuries--but especially during the present time when it appears that nothing imagined by the human mind is impossible. Given this rapid rise of knowledge and its application, it is very easy to believe that man may soon find himself interacting with aliens of worlds far beyond our own—or even, perhaps with God Himself!

Evidences of pre-historic life on earth: Throughout the world, from mountain top to the deepest ocean depth, we find fossils and living specimens that are interpreted by highly experienced scientists of many disciples to indicate the existence of life on earth eons before the biblical account. In addition, even within the biblical allotted time period, many findings appear to be in conflict with the account of the biblical record.

Evidences of love in the world: It would be very difficult to deny or ignore the love that a mother has for her new-born child. In fact, we occasionally see individuals, or even entire societies, expressing the rudiments of self-sacrificing love in the attention and care given to its members--or even its neighbors. It is rare indeed, however, for an individual to intentionally sacrifice one’s life to save the life of a declared enemy--as Jesus, the Son of God, has done.

Moral condition of human society today: While modern science may give a variety explanations in an attempt to explain the moral condition of society, finding none, it is more likely accepted as a normal cyclic phenomenon occurring within an eon’s long evolutionary process.

Search for Universal peace and unity: Recognizing our moral condition and its danger to society, measures are already becoming the focus of attention by both civic and religious organizations, seeking by whatever means as may seem necessary to control its devastating effects upon society. Foremost of those efforts being discussed and promoted is an international campaign to establish universal peace by means of unity under the seemingly unlikely banner of religion itself—using force if necessary.

Evidence in the Holy Scriptures

Natural Law: The Holy Bible is completely compatible with all of the Natural laws that govern all things observable on earth and into the farthest heavens.

Human accomplishments in many disciplines: Though the Bible predicts this “increase in knowledge” presently being experienced in our world (Daniel 12:4; Matthew 24:3-27), it describes it as a final sign of the end of the world and the return of Jesus in power and glory. It gives no indication that man will ever enter into the presence of God Himself before the return of Jesus—then as Lord of Lord’s and King of Kings (Revelation 19:16)--to gather His faithful followers to be with Him for eternity in Heaven and the earth totally recreated--the devil, his followers along with all of their “works,” then removed from existence for eternity (Revelation 20:7-17).

Evidences of pre-historic life on earth: By far the vast majority of the evidence interpreted by many modern scientists as covering eons of time may be explained by the universal flood of Noah’s day as described in the Bible (Genesis 7:17-24). In keeping with this, it is also well accepted in scientific circles that there are still many things that we do not understand about the science of those early centuries and millennia of earth history.

As regards the present accomplishments of science and technology today, the following comments seem appropriate.

According to the Bible, human beings were created in the image of God Himself (Genesis 2:7; Colossians 3:10; Psalms 8:3-6). We may never during this lifetime understand the full implications of this, but one thing seems certain, human beings possess many of the same qualities as God, including the option of interacting one on one with Him here on earth--or for those so choosing, of interacting with the devil and his agents in spiritual warfare. As such, we might only imagine what the first few generations of people living upon the earth, possessing minds unaffected by six thousand years of evil, may have accomplished in all of the various scientific realms we study and explore today. Simply looking at the present condition of the world largely resulting from our selfish exploitation of its natural resources, may give us some idea of what role the antediluvians may have played in causing the flood described in the Bible.

Furthermore, as Satan sought to “sit on the very throne of God in heaven before his exclusion (Isaiah 14:12-15), we may be certain that he is even now working through human beings to accomplish that which he failed in doing before. It is therefore appropriate to consider that our present reach out into the heavens represents that joint attempt by man and Satan. We may be certain that it will never happen, for Satan was defeated in his battle with Jesus that fateful night in the Garden of Gethsemane and upon the cross of Calvary, once and for all eternity (John 19:30; Revelation 16:15-21-17:1-18). He is a defeated foe, and will not have another opportunity.

The existence of good and of evil and, the moral condition of human society: While modern science has little solid evidence by which to explain the undeniable evidence of the existence of both good and evil, the Bible is very clear in describing both its origin in heaven before the creation of our world and its transfer to our world very soon thereafter. Moreover, according to the Holy Bible, God, the Father together with Jesus, the Son, established a plan even before the creation of the world by which in the event that His human creation should be overcome by Satan and become subject to eternal death (which naturally follows one’s disconnect with the source of love, God Himself), the connection might be restored, and with it, eternal life (Genesis 3:15; John 3:16; 1 Peter 1:20).

The existence of God: Modern science is able to see and study the many evidences of a God such as described in the Holy Scriptures, but is unable to see and experience such a God interacting with us humans on a personal level. On the other hand, believers see Him in the providential experiences of our individual lives; in undeniable answers to our personal and corporate prayers, in miracles and otherwise unexplained experiences. We see Him, too, in an abundance of stories and historical records of His cause in the earth for the past six thousand years--most demonstrably illustrated by prophecies extending over thousands of years, and fulfilled to the very month, week and day—even to our present time (Daniel 2:1-27; 8:1-27; 9:20-27).

Universal peace and unity: We see in our world today a move to establish world peace through unifying the diverse religions and philosophies of the world by whatever spiritual, mental, or physical means necessary. On the other hand, the Holy Bible describes the long, vicious war between God and Satan and their supporters, designed to end the conflict between good and evil and establish universal peace and unity in our world and throughout the entire universe, once and for all eternity (Revelation 21:1-27).

The conclusion of the matter. Yes, aliens do exist: The evidence is undeniable, both in the scientific and in the Biblical realms: They exist as angels of light serving under the direction of God in the heavens, and as angels (spirits) of darkness serving at the direction of Satan, the master deceiver, now mustering his evil forces together in one final conflict before their destruction from existence anywhere in the universe, once and for all eternity (Ephesians 6:10-13).

Aliens: We may expect the present attention being given to the many varied aspects of spiritualism (aliens) to continue to increase in frequency and intensity, for the devil “sees” that his time is short (Revelation 12:12), and we may expect that his deceptive practices will continue to escalate so long as he exists.

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (aliens). Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand,” Ephesians 6:12, 13.

“Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil (alien) has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time,” Revelation 12:12.

Finally, and most importantly, the faithful followers of Jesus will be protected from ALL the powers of evil by angels of light.

“No evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; for He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone,” Psalms 91:10-12).

“Then Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him,” Matthew 4:10-11. In the same way we may expect the devil and his cohorts to leave us alone in response to our earnest prayers to God through Jesus.

“Are they (angels) not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” Hebrews 13:2.

The Bible indicates that there are other inhabited worlds in the universe, thus concurring with the suppositions of many modern scientists. By implication, it would appear that the beings of other worlds have never been “taken in” by the devil’s rebellion such as many of the angels of heaven were. Whether or not they have the ability of interstellar travel is not made note of in the Bible except to suggest that representatives of these worlds do occasionally meet in council together in heaven with God.

“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. And the Lord said to Satan, ‘From where do you come?’ So Satan answered the Lord and said, ‘From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.’” Job 1:6, 7 (see also Job 2:1; Hebrews 1:2)

In any event, the Bible is pretty clear that since Satan and his fellow rebel angels were cast out of heaven, this world is the only place in the universe where evil exists. Hence, it is unlikely that the beings of other worlds are seeking contact with planet earth as aliens from outer space.

“By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible,” Hebrews 11:3.
